Care Instructions

Watering

Water weekly when young, every 2 weeks once established. Drought-tolerant but blooms best with consistent moisture. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Sunlight

Full sun (6–8 hours minimum). More sun equals more blooms. Shaded butterfly bushes are leggy with reduced flowering.

Soil

Average, well-drained soil with pH 6.0–7.0. Does not need fertilizer — too much nitrogen reduces blooms and increases invasive spread. Lean soil is fine.

Seasonal Guide

Best Planting Time

Spring after last frost. Fast-growing; will reach blooming size within the first season from a quart-sized plant.

Bloom / Growth Season

Blooms on new wood July–frost. Cut back hard (to 12 inches) in early spring before new growth to maintain shape and maximize blooms.

Dormancy

May die back to ground in zones 5–6 (treat as perennial). In zones 7+, prune back by half in fall, hard prune in early spring.

Common Problems & Solutions

Invasive spreading (in some states)

Choose sterile varieties (Lo & Behold series, Flutterby series). Deadhead before seeds set. Check your state invasive species list.

Spider mites in hot, dry weather

Spray undersides of leaves with strong water stream. Apply neem oil. Increase humidity around plant with mulch.

No butterfly visits despite blooms

Ensure host plants for caterpillars are nearby. Buddleia attracts adult butterflies for nectar but does not support larvae.
